Hugo Award: sai lista de concorrentes e abre uma categoria para HQs

O que é o Hugo Award? Uma resposta simples é: é o Oscar de sci-fi e fantasia. Ele é um prêmio de grande importância neste meio literário e é distribuído todo ano desde 1953 (exceto por 1954), sempre na World Science Fiction Convention (ou WorldCon), em português, Convenção Mundial de Ficção-Científica. A votação para decidir os vencedores é feita pelos membros da World Science Fiction Society (Sociedade Mundial de Ficção Científica), que para entrar basta apenas comprar uma anuidade que varia em torno de 50 dólares. Não é nem preciso ir à Convenção.

O nome Hugo Awards vê do editor Hugo Gernsback, considerado como o responsável por trazer a ficção científica para um público mais amplo. Quanto ao estilo do prêmio, ele varia de ano para ano, mas mantêm sempre o foguete prateado criado por Jack McKnight e Ben Jason (vide ao lado).

Mas este ano isso não é tudo, o Hugo Award 2009 traz uma novidade: foi inaugurada a categoria Best Graphic Story (Melhor História Gráfica), o que cede finalmente um espaço para os quadrinhos, nos quais sempre houve diversas produções relacionadas como sci-fi e fantasia. Até então todo quadrinho que fosse participar do prêmio era situado em “outros formatos” (prêmio ganho por Watchmen e para o qual Sandman: O Caçador de Sonhos foi indicado). Um adendo interessante é que entre os indicados deste ano temos também a participação de web-comics.
