Criado a princípio para ser uma turnê especial de despedida do Jane’s Addiction, o primeiro ano do festival itinerante foi encabeçado por Siouxsie & The Banshees, Loving Colour e, claro, pelos donos da festa, a banda de Perry Farrell. Bandas em ascensão na época como Butthole Surfers e Violent Femmes também brilharam na primeira edição do Lollapalooza que passou por cidades americanas e canadenses
